Last weekend I treated myself to a live concert featuring Samini, Kwabena Kwabena, and Kaakie at “+233.” For a mere 50 cedis ($21.70), I was 20 feet (6 meters) from these popular Ghanaian singers. I arrived early at 8:30pm. By 11pm when Kwabena Kwabena began performing, there must have been 500 people seated and standing.
“+233” or +233 Jazz Bar and Grill is one of a handful of live music venues in Accra. (The country code for Ghana is +233.) I strongly recommend it! On most Friday and Saturday nights, +233 features local (jazz) singers. If there is cover, it typically ranges from 10 to 20 cedis ($4-$8). Sometimes international celebrities passing through town may do a set. Last year, Bono performed there.
Located in North Ridge near the Alisa Hotel, the bar offers affordable drinks, e.g. a large bottle of Star Beer for 6 cedis, and a grill with chicken, goat, fish, beef kebabs for 5-7 cedis. The crowd is older usually men in their 40s and 50s with either their wives or girlfriends. The venue features a large outdoor seating area as well as a small indoor seating area.
